Microlaboratory for an operative definition in water of the sanitary – significant microorganisms

1. The field of an application
The microlaboratory (MICLAB) is intended for the operative determination of the microbiology quality water performance in the water supplies, the water preparation, in swimming pools, on the beach etc.
2. The effect of the project
The project consist in an increasing of the potable water and water recreation safety. It is achieved by the sharp decreasing of the time for the determination of the bacterium in the water. It surmount the microbiology general methods as a rule consisting of an analysis of the results, , which become known after approximately 24 hours, after analyzed water was taken. The delay is especially dangerous when the hidden combined combined wrack of the water and the sewer system happens.
The proposal is to develop an operative method of the determination of the health significant bacteria and an equipment for it on the basis of an operative technique for the determination of the microorganisms in a super clean water in microelectronics, developed in our institute. The method has received a gold medal at the Bruxelles exhibition "Eureka-95".
3. The projected technical and economical characteristics of the microlaboratory in comparison with the existing prototype system "BAC TRAK":

Characteristics BAC TRAK MICLAB
delay time, hours 12 - 24 0.5 - 1.5
quantity of the samples, processed simultaneously 20 20
daily output, samples 40 300
yearly output, samples 17500 109500
time of the functional depreciation, years 5 5
total samples quantity over operating time 87600 550000
initial cost of an user $ 120000 $ 7000
initial cost per analysis $ 1.4 $ 0.013
current expenses per analysis $ 1.0 $ 1.0
cost of analysis $ 2.4 $ 1.02

4. The principle of an operation and a construction of the Microlaboratory
MICLAB made up on the basis of the portable fluorescent microscope and the water sample processing unit, including the filtering device, the thermostat, the tools and the material kit.
The analysis is implemented by the use of the combination of the operations:
- separation of the bacteria from the water;
- incubation on the selective nutrient media;
- staining section with the nuclear acids and the protein specific fluorochromes, between which the nonradiative interaction is possible;
- investigation with the fluorescent microscope.
The nonradiative energy transfer, that is detected by the red irradiation, is the symptom of the sought bacterium.
5. The content and the projected results of the work
An accomplishment of the project results of the work provide:
- development of the method for an operative determination of the bacteria: total bacterium count, total coliforms, thermotolerance coliforms;
- development and design of the devices and accessories for realization of the method;
- design of the required material kit;
- manufacture of the 5 experimental Microlaboratories.
